Thirteen

So I did a lot of shrieking yesterday. A lot of capslock on my phone to my friends. I don't even know how to begin writing about it, but I wanted to say something here, that I can look back on.

The thirteenth Doctor is a woman!

Yes, she's still White, and yes, that is absolutely something that we should address. There is still a way to go. But also: she's a woman. After 54 years! And a really wonderful woman at that. I didn't know Jodie Whittaker before Broadchurch, but she was absolutely mesmerising in all three seasons of that show, and I know she's going to be completely amazing. From the bits and pieces I've read from her so far, I know she *gets* the show, and the Doctor, and we are in extremely safe, capable, brilliant hands.

I knew Thirteen wasn't going to be another White Dude. With 100% certainty. And whilst Jodie Whittaker hadn't been particularly on my radar as a contender, I knew that it was not unlikely that they'd cast someone Chibnall had worked with before. But still - that first moment in the trailer when we saw her hand, and then her eye - I felt all the breath knocked out of me. Then I think I may have screamed? It's all a bit of a blur. I certainly screamed a lot for the next hour or so.

I'm going to miss Twelve a LOT. I love him, and I love his beautiful, subtle, expressive face, and his absurd inability to run in a dignified manner. I love his prickly, difficult kindness, and I love his easy forgiveness. I love the way he's grown and evolved as a person more than any of the other Doctors before him. I'm going to miss him terribly, the way I miss them all. But if there was one thing that could make me able to deal with him leaving, it's this. I can't wait. <3

I don't know what the show will look like under Chris Chibnall. Whether it will be closer in tone to Moffat's vision or to Rusty's, or something completely different. As probably anybody who knows me or has read this journal knows, I'm a huge fan of both Moffat and RTD and would fight bears for them both. Yes, even Moffat. I don't think his seasons have been perfect by any means - but I also don't think they have been any more problematic than RTD's seasons. Just differently so. But in both cases, the problematic elements have been, for me, completely outweighed by all the joy and wonderful things they have done. With that in mind, here are a few things I would love to see going forward: Read more... )

...in other news, I already have a vidsong for the Regeneration and I have to wait until Christmas to make it /o\
purplefringe: Amelie (Default)
I will ramble more about this later, when I'm home, but for now - this vid is for my wonderful and brilliant bff [personal profile] such_heights, whose birthday was a few weeks ago. <3 She loves this song, and this show, and she deserves ALL THE NICE THINGS IN THE WORLD, so here you go buddy. Have 4 minutes of the beautiful Bill Potts smiling at the universe, and the beautiful Twelfth Doctor smiling at Bill.

Huge, huge thanks to [personal profile] elisi, who watched several near-identical iterations of this vid and found lovely and helpful things to say about all of them, and whose Doctor Who meta continues to be the greatest.

Sooooooo.....I had a dream. Or rather, A VISION. From the PROPHETS of Bajor. 'You must make a vid', they said. 'You must vid...THE GARAK.'

And I said, 'The Garak? What is this?'

And they showed me. And lo, it was good.

...ok, what actually happened was this:

And then I did nothing. And then, almost a year later, this happened:

And still I did nothing. And then, finally, over a year since I was first blessed with a Vision from the Prophets, I commenced my life's work:

And so, dear friends, I humbly submit to you this vid, towards which the Prophets guided me, almost two years ago. It just premiered at Vidukon. I hope it brings you joy.

ETA: wrote this in a hurry before the Vidukon premieres show, and so I FORGOT, like the terrible person I am, to thank the amazing [personal profile] bironic and [personal profile] cosmic_llin for their wonderful and supremely patient beta comments, and also [personal profile] such_heights, [personal profile] raven and Flatmate L for their enthusiasm for Garak being punched in the face.

I don't have the brain at the moment to say anything about Doctor Who, except that I am loving Bill and everything she is, and I continue to adore Twelve, and the chemistry between them is glorious, and this latest episode in particular was everything I dreamed of and more. I will hopefully have meta thoughts soon (certainly The Pilot was crammed full of all of the usual Moffat tropes, about which I have already written copious words) but at the moment I have no energy for anything more complicated than "look at their faces!" (they are REALLY good faces.)

But speaking of 'look at their faces' - I received the most wonderful Doctor/River vid from [personal profile] jetpack_monkey as my [community profile] equinox_exchange gift, which you should go and watch. It's really fun and dynamic and emphasises the playful nature of their timey-wimey relationship. And the lyrics are perfect, and used to great effect!

AND I was very, very lucky and also received a treat in the form of a DS9 Sisko family vid by the wonderful [personal profile] cosmic_llin, which made my cold robotic heart grow about sixteen sizes, and made me cry. I just. They are SUCH a perfect space family, I don't know what to do about it. And this vid captures that brilliantly.

I defaulted on my own assignment. It was the right decision - I had very stupidly offered a big fandom that I only belatedly realised I wasn't really equipped to vid, and then obviously matched on that fandom, and that fandom only. I gave it a shot, and put off defaulting for a really long time, but gave up in the end. I feel really bad about it - even though I know it happens all the time and that's what the 'default' option is there for, and some amazing picnh-hitter stepped up so my recipient still got a great gift, blah blah blah - and am probably not going to sign up for the next equinox exchange. I have come to realise that I just can't vid to a time limit or to other people's specifications. But I'm glad the exchange exists, and can't wait to see the next outpouring of new vids in the autumn.

HI VIDDING TYPES! *waves*

It is SPRING here in London, and, as ever, that means I've recently passed several important annual milestones: I have eaten and rejoiced in my first creme egg of the year (a sacred moment); I have listened to Paul Simon’s Graceland (the greatest album ever) whilst walking in the sunshine and smiling inanely to myself at how warm it is; and…I’ve had a vidshow approved for this year’s Vidukon!

This year, what with the fact that Everything In The World Is On Fire, I thought we could all do with a short break from the unrelenting misery of the impending apocalypse. SO to that end, I’m planning a COMEDY vidshow :-) I thought a nicely cathartic release of oxytocin could be extremely helpful. Working title is either ‘Tragedy Tomorrow – Comedy Tonight’, from the wonderful Sondheim musical A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, or 'Make 'Em Laugh', from Singing In The Rain - but alternative title suggestions are welcome.

So: rec me vids, please! Any vid that makes you laugh out loud, or at least grin wildly and flail your hands around in uncontrolled glee – that's what I want! I’m interested in any and all genres – from hugely popular TV shows to niche indie films to RPF to literally anything else. Character studies, crack!vids, dance vids, multifandom tropey extravaganzas…anything that makes you laugh. Watching vids en masse is often a very different experience from watching them alone, so if you remember any funny vids that have had a particularly great reaction at other conventions, do share.

There’s endless ways vids can wring humour from a source – perhaps it’s a funny show in the first place, and the vid makes the most of the characters’ physicality and ridiculous facial expressions, with exquisite comic timing. Perhaps it’s a more serious show, vidded from a new and unexpected angle to get humour from incongruity. Perhaps it’s just pure crack. Ideally, I’d like to end up with a mixture. I aim to make everyone’s sides hurt by the end of the show. :-D

Self-recs are, as always, highly encouraged! And premieres are very welcome. I'm not sure when the deadline is, but if you think you might have a premiere in the works, let me know and I'll investigate.

(Also - come to Vidukon! It's awesome.)

Hi secret vidder! I'm super excited you're going to make me a vid in spaaaaaaace \o/ You already have all my flaily thoughts and feelings from my sign-up, but as everyone else is doing a letter I thought I'd put them here too for reference:

Er, so, I also made a festivid treat for [personal profile] such_heights because that is a thing I do. I actually made this before I made my assignment (and thought I was going to have to default on my assignment) and then proceeded to lie about it through my teeth to an unsuspecting [personal profile] such_heights, because I am a terrible person and a frighteningly good liar when I want to be.

She wanted a vid about Matilda and Miss Honey, and their lovely relationship, and so that is what she got <3 I'm glad you like it, Arthur. Thank you to [personal profile] shinyjenni and [personal profile] cosmic_llin for betaing and enthusiasm!

Hi, lovely Festividder!

Sorry about the slightly unhelpful notes on my sign-up – I did it all a bit last minute this year. There are some slightly more helpful thoughts here, if you want them. I belatedly realised that all of the fandoms I’ve requested are ones I’ve asked for in previous years, because I am unimaginative apparently. So a lot of this is copied directly from my past FV letters. But the main thing is that you make a vid that you enjoy. :-) I love Festivids, it's one of the highlights of my year, and mostly I just want everyone else to have a great time too.

HAI FRIENDS. I have not posted in a looong time. This is what happens when there's a WHOLE YEAR without Doctor Who, and I don't have 5000-word meta posts I need to get out of my head before I can go to sleep. (Soon that will not be the case. My show is coming back! Aaaaaah.)

So what have I been doing? Well, mostly, I've been having a lot of feelings about Star Trek. Like, a LOT of feelings. )

Just got home from Vidukon! As ever, it was a completely wonderful weekend of vids, squee, too much sugar, more vids, more squee, and really excellent company. <3 Always one of the highlights of my year. I am too tired to do anything like a proper con report, but will note for those of you who weren't there that you can watch most of the vids shown at the con website, which is really comprehensive and awesome. I ran a vidshow called 'This Will Always Be Our Home' which seemed to go down well, and there were amazing shows on themes as diverse as Aliens, Revolution, Vampires, Fairytales, a nostalgic look back at what people were vidding 10 years ago, and lots of other great ideas. There was also Premieres! Oh, there were so many wonderful things, I just. All my friends are so talented. <3 Many feels were had. Also, I spent much of the weekend covered in glitter, and randomly yelling at people, 'Jesus Christ, I thought you were a fucking BEAR'. Those two facts are unconnected. In conclusion: VIDUKON, YOU GUYS.

Anyway, it was also [personal profile] such_heights' birthday yesterday, so I made her a little vidlet of some of our favourite BFFs being BFFs. It is not the most polished thing I've ever made, but it is made with all the love in the world, because [personal profile] such_heights is the greatest, you guys, and I'm not sure what I've done to deserve her as a best friend. She was happy for me to put this online, so here it is.

It's that time of year again - I'm after your recs for my Vidukon show! The title is This Will Always Be Our Home, so I'm looking for vids on the theme of, you know, home.

In other words, vids that explore what it means to to leave home, to miss home, to return home, to find a home, to build a home, to welcome someone home, to be without a home...etc. Is 'home' a building, a country, a planet, a spaceship - is it a place at all, or is it a person, or people? Is it a state of mind? Is it an illusion? How have different vidders interpreted/illustrated the concept of 'home' differently?

Give me your recs, people! I want anything that could be vaguely interpreted as relating to this theme. And ideally I'd like a mix of fandoms, genres, tones of vids (ie not every vid has to be Super Serious And Emotional, though I'm sure lots will be). Also, self-recs are very much encouraged! Nobody knows the themes of your vids like you do. Also premieres are, of course, very welcome :-) I think the deadline is in May, but if you think you might have a premiere in the works, let me know and I'll investigate.

(Also - come to Vidukon. Seriously, it's really great.)

Festivids reveeeeeeals! I got two wonderful vids - This Sullen Welsh Heart, a Pride vid by [personal profile] futuransky about politics and protest and hope and despair and carrying on fighting anyway. <3 It defies my feeble attempts at explanation, you should all go and watch it and cry.

I also got a treat in the form of You're My Best Friend, aka THE CUTEST SIR IAN & SIR PATRICK BFF VID EVER from my actual bff [personal profile] such_heights(<33333!). It's just a fucking delight. LOOKIT THEM. THEY LOVE EACH OTHER. We are totally going to be like that when we're old and even dorkier than we are now.

I totally meant to make treats this year, but was tragically short on inspiration, and also distracted making two kind of spontaneous Doctor Who vids....oops.

But - HILARIOUSLY - I was actually assigned [personal profile] such_heights as my FV recipient this year! It had to happen sometime, I guess?! We actually matched on several different things, and I can't even remember if this was one of them. But her request for a Verity and Waris vid caught my eye. I promised her that I hadn't made her a treat this year, so she totally thought she had one up on me by making me the aforementioned CUTEST SIR IAN & SIR PATRICK BFF VID EVER. Then It turned out that I'd made her a vid anyway. MWA HA HA. She guessed this vid was from me before even watching it. The metadata was a bit of a clue :-) More ramblings about that here )

Anyway, enough talking now, I'm the only person who cares about all this backstory - here's the vid:

So. Doctor Who. I haven't written anything on here about this season so far, which is unusual. Partly this was because my brain and entire being was consumed by Hamilton for much of the early part of the season, leaving no room for meta, and partly it's because this season has been slightly...I don't know. Calmer? Less overt? I don't know. Something. But anyway, little meta thoughts have been percolating away at the back of my mind, but I haven't felt the overwhelming need to write anything until now.

But now.

Oh Clara, my Clara. )

Last night I sat on my bed for nearly four hours, and wrote down all my feelings about exactly how the crew of DS9 would do Hamilton. This wasn't completely out of the blue; it's something I've been pondering at the back of my mind for a few weeks. But eventually, as always, my head got too full and I had to write it down somewhere. This isn't really a fic (I do not know how to write fic) - it's just my thoughts. But [personal profile] such_heights and [personal profile] raven said I should put it online, so here it is. All 5,400 words of it. (For anyone concerned: I have currently seen up to ep 5.8 of DS9, so there are mild spoilers up to there, I guess, and no spoilers beyond that.)

I'm working on a vid at the moment, and thanks to my lovely betas it's going v well. I will probably post it tomorrow. (For those of you who did read my Hamilton post - it happened! I got (most of) my brain back! I can DO THINGS again! I can THINK again! It's so exciting). ANWAY like I said I've been working on a vid and it's going well BUT a few weeks ago (pre-Hamilton) I had a sudden horrifying realisation: I have made this vid before.

Like, not this *actual vid*, obviously. But basically the SAME vid, except about a different character in a different fandom. I raged about this via text to [personal profile] such_heights, who was on her honeymoon at this point and I think mostly laughed at me in a fond sort of way.

A couple of hours later, I was struck by ANOTHER horrifying realisation: I have made this vid TWICE before. No, wait, make that THREE times. THREE. TIMES.

This all led to a bit of a vid-sistential crisis. And because I am me and I like Order and Clarity and Completeness, I made a List. This got abandoned and left to languish forlornly in a googledoc whilst I then proceeded to have a total meltdown over a certain musical (yayhamlet!) but now that I'm back in the real world I thought I'd resurrect it. I love hearing about other people's creative processes, which is why I always write such rambling accompanying notes when I post my own vids - I assume I can't be the only person who enjoys that sort of background info.

So this, for any of you who similarly enjoy this sort of thing, is Five Ways To Tell If You Are Watching A Purplefringe Vid: long ramblings beneath the cut )
