You are going to make me a VID which automatically makes you awesome. In addition to which, you have offered to vid one of the eclectic mix of fandoms below, so clearly we should be friends. I know I will love whatever you make, and so the most important thing is that you have a great time making it, because I think it really shines through when a vidder has loved making something :-D But if you're looking for inspiration, take a look back at my previous FV letters for notes on music (nothing has really changed), and here are some notes on this year's fandoms which you may or may not find helpful:

Such Dorks

Doctor Who is coming back this Saturday, which means that in a little less than 72 hours' time, my brain is going to be All Doctor Who All The Time, and consequently so will this journal.

But for now, here is a thing that is not Doctor Who (or, at least, only somewhat Doctor Who): The Such Dorks Wedding Album

As pretty much all of you will know (because most of you were there :-P) [personal profile] such_heights and [personal profile] happydork got married last weekend, in the most awesome space-themed wedding to ever wedding. In honour of this occasion, and because I love them both very much, I decided to exploit all my extremely talented friends, and, with the help of Awesome Flatmate K, put together a book of fannish joy for [personal profile] such_heights and [personal profile] happydork, full of messages from some of their fictional loves who sadly couldn't make the wedding. Some of these are now up on the AO3, thanks to the lovely [personal profile] thingswithwings, and hopefully a few more will go up over the next week. Go! Read! Cry happy tears!

I am incredibly grateful to [personal profile] carawj, [personal profile] cosmic_llin, [personal profile] fly_to_dawn, gnimaerd, [personal profile] kaydeefalls, [personal profile] raven, [personal profile] shinyjenni, [personal profile] silly_cleo, [personal profile] soupytwist [personal profile] thingswithwings, [personal profile] qian, and Awesome Flatmates K and L for all the beautiful, moving, funny, delightful things they made for the book! <3

Wow, never have lyrics from the vid I'm working on been SO RELEVANT to the act of working on the vid.

So, er, I started this one in February /o\ And to be fair, I did make fully two thirds of it in less than a week. It was just the remaining third that took, um, six months. I think that's a new record. (My last Clara vid was a mere two months late.) Most of that time was spent opening FinalCut, shuddering, and closing it again, so perhaps it only really took one month, spread over six months. ANYWAY, it was not supposed to be posted a mere 3 weeks before Series 9, but I'm too excited about it being A MERE THREE WEEKS UNTIL SERIES NINE to care much.

As usual, thanks go to the lovely [personal profile] such_heights for watching a millionty drafts of this, and making soothing noises at me when I complained at her about it. (I'm sorry I do that so much <3) And also for providing the last-minute technical support I still need, despite this being my 31st vid. Oops.

(Speaking of which - if anyone knows how to deal with those FUCKING SQUARE PIXELS that are marring their beautiful faces, please let me know. I don't know why they're there, I've never had this problem before, I want to throw my laptop out the window /o\)

ALSO on this occasion, huge thanks to the amazing [personal profile] elisi, without whom I would definitely never have finished this stupid vid. She went waaaaaay above and beyond the call of vid-beta-ly duty, and sent the most *incredible*, detailed, encouraging, thoughtful, analytical emails, in response to my somewhat pathetic call for help. She also helped me to clarify just what I was actually trying to say - there are one or two parts of this vid that were constructed clip-by-clip with her, via email. I hope you really did enjoy the process as much as you said you did. <3 This vid is for you! :-)

My entire DW rlist is just all my friends posting vids, and it's GLORIOUS. I need to go and comment on them all to tell you how great they are.

In the meantime, I'm going to join the party! Last weekend was Vidukon, which is always one of the highlights of my year and this year was no exception. (Despite me being a massive failboat and not getting my auction vid done. Oops.) ANYWAY, I did manage to premiere my Sleepy Hollow vid, and watching a whole bunch of people laugh at it was one of the most enjoyable things ever :-D Ichabod Crane, sir, what even are you??

Yep, it's a shiny, newly-minted copy of COMPANION PIECE, edited by L.M. Myles and Liz Barr, published by Mad Norwegian Press, and containing an essay by me! Eeep. I haven't actually received my contributor copies yet, but I already know that all 30-something essays, by a whole bunch of fabulous women, will be dazzling and thought-provoking and delightful. The book is the third in the Doctor Who 'Geek Girl' series - following the success of Chicks Dig Timelords and Chicks Unravel Time - and this one focuses, as you might imagine from the title, on the Companions. *All* of the Companions.

I was lucky enough to get to write about the true and beautiful perfection of Mary Tamm's Romana I <3 (As documented visually in this vid, which I made to say thank you to [personal profile] shinyjenni for her editing and encouragement, and to express the overflow of Romana love I had after watching The Key To Time twice through.) It's been about a year and a half since I actually wrote it (!) and I can't quite bring myself to go back and look at it ever again because oh god /o\ BUT it's called 'What Has Romana Ever Done For Us?' and if nothing else I am pleased with the title.

Many thanks to [personal profile] calapine for letting me have words in her book! :-D

As everyone else seems to be doing it - hi internets, please help me with my VidUKon vidshow! The theme is TROPES, and if anyone can think of a better title than [personal profile] such_heights's suggestion of 'Tropetastic!', please do let me know :-)

So, this is hopefully going to be a joyful show celebrating all the fun that can be had with the tropes that crop in in all our favourite shows. Obvious examples include time loops, doppelgangers and bodyswaps. Tropes can also be character types - the dorky scientist, the badass warrior woman, the unlikely hero...you get the picture. I'm interested in patterns and parallels, so there will probably be a lot of multifandom vids in this show - but if anyone has recs for tropey vids that are confined to a particular fandom (particularly long-running shows like Doctor Who or Star Trek), those are awesome too.

Please rec me vids! When I put together the Constructed Realities show last year, everybody's suggestions were incredibly helpful. Even if you think a vid is really obvious and I've probably seen it, remind me about it anyway! And self-recs are very much encouraged :-)

So I, er, seem to have signed up for the VidUKon Vid Auction?!

For those who don't know, [community profile] vidukon_cardiff is a wonderful vidding con that takes place in Cardiff every summer - this year will be its fifth year! I attended for the first time back in 2011, before I even knew how to vid, and was very lucky to meet an extremely awesome bunch of vidders and vid fans who are now my very good friends :-D (hi guys!) The con is now one of the highlights of my year.

It's a pretty small con - currently averaging around 30 attendees, I think? - but it's brilliantly run by an incredibly dedicated con com, and is a truly welcoming space. I really hope it continues to grow and thrive, because it's so much fun to just hang out in Cardiff for a weekend and watch endless vids with a bunch of people who share that enthusiasm. Everyone should check out their website, where you can watch all the vidshows from previous years, and sign up to attend this year! If you can't attend but still want to support the con, you can also sign up for a £16 supporting membership which gets you some exciting things.

Aaaand back to the point of this post - you can ALSO support the con by bidding in the vid auction! [personal profile] buffyann, [personal profile] jagwriter78, [personal profile] lithiumdoll and I have all signed up, and you should totally go and bid for one of us to make you the vid of your heart. 75% of any funds made after the target of £100 is reached will go to the charity RAINN.

I'm offering a fairly small selection of fandoms that either I'm currently very into or that I know well enough not to worry about vidding. BUT I'm very open to suggestions! Particularly in any fandom I've previously vidded, or any film. If you have an idea for a vid you may like me to make but it's not in a fandom I've offered, please feel free to drop me a message or a comment and we can talk about it :-)

Ok, so I should have done this on Golive day like everyone else, but I was too overwhelmed with squee. Is that an ok excuse? I received TWO amazing and wonderful vids this year, and I am THRILLED and DELIGHTED by both :-D \o/ I really love the way the treats culture seems to be growing every year in Festivids. It's such a warm, generous exchange. So, without further ado, I received:

Always 1895 by [personal profile] dkwilliams

This is a beautiful, nostalgic, layered look at Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson in the Granada TV series. I say 'layered', because not only does it make lovely use of the Granada series footage - Jeremy Brett's breathtaking physicality, the subtle, tender looks and gestures passed between Holmes and Watson, the alternately quiet and chaotic moments of their lives together in Baker Street - but it it is set to a recording of Basil Rathbone reading Vincent Starret's famous poem, over the top of the music from the Private Life of Sherlock Holmes. In addition to which - as if that wasn't enough - I started to notice on multiple repeat viewings that a lot of the chosen clips are moments when the series deliberately recreates the original illustrations by Sydney Paget - see for example the moment in the train carriage which recreates this illustration from The Adventure of Silver Blaze. The vid also uses some perfect clips to represent the more evocative moments in the poem - the yellow fog, Holmes' mischievous reveal of the papers at 'England is England yet', the 'view-halloo' out on the moors. I especially love Watson's faint on 'Only those things the heart believes are true.' (Like he never really believed in his heart that Holmes was gone. Like the fans didn't.)

But as well as the multiple versions of Holmes and Watson that are conjured in this vid, the use of external footage from real-world recordings of the First World War adds a whole additional layer of pathos. The vid summary is 'No matter what changes occur in the real world, for Sherlock Holmes and his Watson(s), it is always 1895' which reflects the message of the poem - and the inspired use of the real world footage really *does* give Holmes and Watson the very timeless quality that the poem talks about. And at the same time, it seems to insinuate them even further into the real fabric of our world. If that makes sense? It's not at all jarring to see Holmes and Watson juxtaposed with back and white images of the WW1 battlefields. It just makes them seem more real. I don't know, I'm not being very coherent here. What even are words. Just watch the vid. In conclusion, I love this. It is everything I love about the enduring mythos of Holmes and Watson <3

I also received a treat in the form of Flash Bang Wallop by the very sneaky and wonderful [personal profile] cosmic_llin.

*flails incoherently*

WHAT CAN I EVEN SAY. THIS IS A VID ABOUT MICHAEL PALIN AND HIS FACE AND IT'S UTTERLY PERFECT AND I LOVE HIM AND I LOVE THIS VID AND I LOVE [personal profile] cosmic_llin. The song choice is amazing - absolutely full of JOY and and a very British kind of wry humour. Ideal for the lovely Mr Palin and his Pole to Pole adventures, particularly as the whole song is about recording awkward moments on camera. But more than that - the vid just dances along, showcasing all the adorable, gentlemanly dorkiness that I love about Michael Palin (my first ever celebrity crush, age 12). I particularly love the shot of him casually strolling amongst the camels, and the kissing shot over 'When Juliet fell for Romeo'. I love him veiled in a mosquito net ('in a wedding group'), dressed up as a Roman ('in a Shakespeare play') and covered in mud and jumping naked off a boat and all the other clever lyrical matches. I love his face. I love his dancing. I love his reactions to everything, and his friendliness to everyone. I love the people he meets on his journey all befriending him and watching him interact with the world with some combination of delight, fondness and perplexity. I love his game expressions as he bravely submits to whatever indignities he has signed himself up for next, all the while filmed by his crew. Have I mentioned that I love his face?

I actually can't watch this without a huge, ridiculous grin. I will watch it every time I am sad, and I suggest everybody else does likewise <3

warnings: Tragically, this is not really representative of the film. I wish it were. The *actual* plot involves several kind of douchy guys, who take up valuable screen time which could and should have been given to Karen Gillan. So...apologies if this vid gets your hopes up. Femslash is entirely subtextual.

Ramblings )

Once again, I set out to write a series of bullet points covering a range of themes and motifs in Doctor Who S8...and once again, I found myself stuck on one particular topic. Concise, I am not. So - having discussed Eyes in S8, here you go, have some significantly less focused thoughts on soldiers. This is a very long, fairly superficial summary of what we've seen so far in terms of soldiers and how they relate to the Doctor's character (plus, er, multiple digressions onto barely-related topics). Don't expect in-depth analysis, because my brain can't seem to manage that right now. Just 4000+ words of blather. Also be warned: there are spoilers for the Finale in here, but nothing that hasn't been revealed in official promo photos/trailers already.

Hi, fellow Festividder!

Thank you in advance for making me a thing! <3 I know I will love it, because you are clearly a person of excellent taste, who shares at least one of my somewhat eclectic collection of interests :-) I hope you have an awesome time vidding!

As I've said in previous years, I have no particular vid bunnies for any of these sources, so you should make the vid of your heart that you will have the most fun with. That said, I've found in the past that having some guidance on recipient's tastes/thoughts/feelings has really helped me, so here's some ramblings you can totally ignore if you like:

festivids musings mostly on British cultural icons, Bollywood films and, er, The Sims )
purplefringe: Amelie (Default)
In The Forest of the Night airs tomorrow - the last standalone Doctor Who ep before the two-part season finale. At this point last season, just before Neil Gaiman's Nightmare In Silver graced our screens, I posted my summary of Clara theories, which has now once more become relevant in light of the end of Flatline. This time, I was intending to write a succinct summary of all of the main themes and motifs of Doctor Who S8, along with speculation as to where they might be leading. Instead I got carried away thinking about Eyes, and so discussion of Soldiers, Robots, Naming Things and other themes will have to wait until my brain has recalibrated. Also, I am sure that there will be a LOT of meta to ponder after tomorrow's tree-filled episode. So in the meantime:

HUGE thanks to [personal profile] shinyjenni and [personal profile] beccatoria for wonderfully insightful and articulate beta-ing via email! <3 <3 <3 And also, as always, to [personal profile] such_heights who watched this particular vid on her holiday, and then numerous times since :-)
