I did my best, it wasn't much

guys, I...I made another Good Omens vid? A third one? I don't know what has happened, I don't understand anything any more, apparently Good Omens is my whole life now. (Which is good, I guess, because I have well and truly noped out of engaging with the Real World in quite a serious way, so it's nice to have something else to think about.)

This one has...Feelings in it. Many Feelings, which I absolutely did not know I had. But there we are. It's also to a piece of music about which I (along with approx. half the world) have Many Feelings, although I did know about those, because I once wrote a 2,000 word email-essay containing some of them. (it's NOT Queen, I promise)

I think I had a lot more to say, but it has temporarily escaped the chronicler's mind. Er. Have a vid, I guess.

Thank you to the wonderful [personal profile] soupytwist, [personal profile] such_heights & [personal profile] raven, who are lovely and thoughtful (and patient, and long-suffering) betas. If you haven't already, you should watch the Good Omens vids such_heights and raven have made recently, which are both breathtaking in very different ways.

Hallelujah
edited by [personal profile] purplefringe
fandom: Good Omens
music: Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, covered by Pentatonix
summary: there's a blaze of light in every word / it doesn't matter which you heard / the holy or the broken hallelujah. On faith, and falling, and freedom.
content notes: a shot of a snake at 00:18; a brief shot of a nail being driven into someone's wrist at 2:08. (I also have a version without the snake, if anyone would like that one)

ETA: I strongly recommend you go and read [personal profile] elisi's extraordinary Good Omens meta - the first section is a wonderful commentary on Aziraphale's journey as presented through this glorious vid by promethia-tenk, and the second section (about two thirds down the page) is about Crowley, and ties into this vid! YAY, INTER-TEXTUAL FANWORKS \o/

So, I am at about Crowley levels of upset about this:

Like, you weren't kidding about the FEELINGS. Need to re-watch it more, what with the five hundred different meanings and layers you give to 'Hallelujah', but will get back to you asap.

(It also amuses me greatly that while you have been creating this exquisite work of beauty and faith, Owls, Promethia (and I, although not as literally) have been creating something... completely, utterly different. And that both are made from the same six hours or so of TV. This show is a freaking miracle.)

ETA: OK, I am back!

- 'Secret chord' = Ineffable Plan?

- 'But you don't care for music' I presume this is noting that Aziraphale does not want to question anything?

- Obvs the 'minor fall'/'major lift' are *inspired*.

- Aziraphale with the dove is just heartbreaking. And that's all you & the music, cause it's fine on the show. (Although 'Baffled king' is perfect.)

- 'You saw her bathing on the roof' - again, exquisite clip matches, and Azira carrying his heart in his hands.

- But then: 'She tied you to the kitchen chair/She broke your throne and she cut your hair/And from your lips, she drew the Hallelujah' And fuck me that's amazing. (This comment will be mostly flailing.) The uncomfortable notes of The Arrangement all laid out, and (something that is often overlooked) but Crowley is very good at his job. (The way he talks Aziraphale into influencing the Antichrist is masterful.)

- Then a whole collection of Aziraphale faces of continual sadness. This vid was made to crush people. :'( ETA: OK, so it's all about Azira's disappointment with, and dismissal by, Heaven, but his FACE.

- Crowley! Crowley in dialogue. Crowley being cynical and harsh because he's been hurt, and I have literally been writing meta on this today, so I am going to go lightly over that verse cause otherwise I'd just write the whole thing out again.

- 'Well, maybe there's a God above/But all I've ever learned from love/Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya' THIS. This killed me. This slays me on every view. This is goddamn genius and I have ALL the feelings about Crowley and his relationship with God and re-creating his own Garden and treating the plants the way he was himself (I presume that's the Tumblr meta that inspired it?) and MY HEART.

- Break-up. Ugh, also sad. Especially like Crowley's helpless gesture (on 3.01), which just matches things perfectly. How he is trying to communicate, and it's just not working.

- 'Hallelujah'. Aziraphale going up into the light and Crowley down below in the flames is just a gorgeous, gorgeous juxtaposition, and I haven't seen anything like it elsewhere.

- And then you manage to tell the whole rest of the story with only Hallelujahs and music. Especially loved the parallel between grasping Agnes' prophecy and the apple, although I'd love any further insights into clip choices. (or not, if you're all exhausted... <3)

I think that's it. I'll go away and cry about Aziraphale's face and Crowley's pain.

Is there a Tumblr meta about this? Do you have the link?

There is, and... I will try to find it.

PS. Came back to mention that I am thrilled to pieces that you DID make 'a vid examining all the theological arguments, biblical concepts and questions of morality which are touched on in Good Omens. There's some really interesting metaphysical ideas in there, and it just struck me that someone should make a vid exploring that more closely'.

And you certainly explored them.

Kyrie eleison (Lord, have mercy) indeed.

(Also wanted to say that I am going to link back to your vid from my Crowley meta - which will be tacked onto my vid meta for Promethia's vid - because it's like you took what I'd written and turned it into gut wrenching poetry. Or maybe I just wrote notes on [the Crowley parts] of your vid before having even seen it. *g*)

Actually, I could send you what I've written? Since this meta has turned from 'Meta on ONE vid + bonus meta, to Meta on TWO vids.' And now I'll try to stop editing this comment.

HI FRIEND I have been *deeply* enjoying your comments
*pleased* I have been deeply enjoying the vid (om nom nom heartbreaking meta, yes please and thank you) and thought I'd attempt to be coherent. Looking forward to your replies/insights when you have the time. <3

but just to say I am reading them and I am VERY EXCITED for your meta
Check your inbox in... ten minutes? I'll only send the Crowley part, since that's what relevant to your (current) interests, and the whole thing would break gmail.

I mean, ok, yes 90% of it is about the crushing loss of A's faith in Heaven, his dawning realisation that really, truly, nobody is listening…but it is also 10% about HIS FACE. (Specifically, it was me vidding this twitter thread: https://twitter.com/CharCubed/status/1141531169839886337?s=20)

You made me think of that exact Twitter thread, so, you know, vidding accomplished.

(And I'm guessing you saw Sheen's reply? https://twitter.com/michaelsheen/status/1142584925234839552 )

He and Crowley have chosen *knowledge*, and freedom

"Time to leave the garden".

Also! It's an extension of what Aziraphale's already figured out with "Demons can" and hopping back to Earth to possess people -- that Heaven and Hell and angels and demons are arbitrary sides and categories not the polar opposites being claimed (as well as not lining up with actual good and evil), that there's no fundamental abyss between them.

Having realized that:

a) Of course he and Crowley can bodyswap (no "probably explode"), because they're not matter and anti-matter, they're the same supernatural stuff, and
b) Of course Heaven and Hell, invested in the existence of that fundamental abyss, won't suspect that because, invested in the existence of that abyss, they can't imagine it as possible.

(For various reasons, I am very much of the opinion that Aziraphale's the one who came up with the bodyswap idea.)

Sorry about the late reply, been away...

IT IS. Between us, Promethia and I have created four WILDLY DIFFERENT vids about Aziraphale and Crowley, from the same six (6) hours of footage. wtf. As I think I said in another vid post, the only other sources I have vidded more than twice are Doctor Who and Star Trek, both of which are...considerably longer. wtf.
Oh and she's planning another one! Although she's taking her time this time round... mostly though this might be the richest and deepest show ever.

This is...a bit more complicated.
Thank you for explaining! It's such a great clip (and not one I've seen around much), and guessed at layers.

Oh, I'm so glad you like this bit - it was one of the very last bits of the vid to come together properly.
It was especially interesting seeing it, having been through it all with Sugar Daddy, and to see someone else presenting the evidence in quite a similar manner ('Yes, this is in many ways problematic') was nice.

I mean, ok, yes 90% of it is about the crushing loss of A's faith in Heaven, his dawning realisation that really, truly, nobody is listening…but it is also 10% about HIS FACE.
How does his face... DO THAT? D:

Specifically, it was me vidding this twitter thread
And that made it hurt EVEN MORE. Good job.

But yes, exactly, it was That Tumblr Plant Meta that is behind this bit
Everything hurts. :(

and I like it for the helplessness of him raising an outstretched hand towards something that he knows won’t reach back for him.
CROWLEY!

He and Crowley have chosen *knowledge*, and freedom, have chosen to really understand the meaning of Good and Evil, in a way that neither Heaven nor Hell do. That’s why the apple shot is followed by them both at their trials - C-as-A defiantly raising his hands (again!) when his bonds are taken off, and A-as-C joyfully flicking holy water at the watching demons. I get that that’s….a lot to try and express in like 4 clips! /o\
Thank you! This is all brilliant and I am v happy you bothered to explain. ♥ I am enjoying it even more now. :) (As I... write fic! *cries*)

ANOTHER ONE??? :D :D :D oooooh I can't WAIT! If she wants another beta, I offer my services!
I shall pass the message on. :) And I think it's partly due to the Crowley parts of your vid, in that his issues are complex and interesting and she wants to dig deeper. But she is taking her time about this one.

I enjoy beta-ing! I have finally run out of vidding steam myself, and am now in this weird stupid limbo where I am still fully obsessed with GO, but not actually *creating* anything new any more
I'm sort of the opposite, in that I am now writing TWO fics and have a third plot bunny. /o\

(...just, instead, obsessively re-editing THIS VID and overthinking the bits I am mad about and wish I had done differently and could change...two weeks after posting it. *facepalm* why am i like this???)
Pft. I am in the process of re-posting a fic to AO3 (only on LJ previously) from... 2006? And re-editing as I go along. Editing never stops.

V excited for your fic!! \o/ what a beautiful playground this is.
It really is. My fic (the main one) will be a continuation of the deft, sweet gesture of your hand (because I love it and it doesn't interesting things and... well. I hope the author won't mind). In case you haven't read it, run, don't walk. It's amazing.

[personal profile] elisi 2019-08-08 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's different if you are re-editing a fic from a decade ago, and posting it on a new site! Re-editing a thing you made and published two weeks ago, which you are not going to be able to re-post, is just a pointless activity. But there you go.
Well I am forever re-editing new stuff too. Letting go and posting is always difficult because I KNOW that I'll spot something that needs fixing after I have posted... ETA: I would, incidentally, love to see new edits. And Promethia says she is Quite Likely to take you up on the beta offer, since having an actual vidder look at stuff will probably be helpful! *g* She is still gathering thoughts, so just wait and see.

Ooooooohhhh THANK YOU that was WONDERFUL. I have read *so* *much* *fic* in the past two months, it's absurd. That one was so tender and soft and lovely and I can't wait to read your continuation!
Iloveitsomuch. (And it should have been 'it does interesting things', but that's what I get for writing in a hurry), but yeah, the KNITTING and the POETRY and ugh. It just has a special place in my heart. And I am succeeding in upsetting myself with what I'm writing. Go me.

Also - sidebar to all this - watching 'Never Look Away' immediately followed by 'Pompeii' is excellent. And the dedication at the end never fails to make me terribly happy.
