An Adventure in Space and Festivids

Festivids reveeeeeeals! I got two wonderful vids - This Sullen Welsh Heart, a Pride vid by
futuransky about politics and protest and hope and despair and carrying on fighting anyway. <3 It defies my feeble attempts at explanation, you should all go and watch it and cry.
I also got a treat in the form of You're My Best Friend, aka THE CUTEST SIR IAN & SIR PATRICK BFF VID EVER from my actual bff
such_heights(<33333!). It's just a fucking delight. LOOKIT THEM. THEY LOVE EACH OTHER. We are totally going to be like that when we're old and even dorkier than we are now.
I totally meant to make treats this year, but was tragically short on inspiration, and also distracted making two kind of spontaneous Doctor Who vids....oops.
But - HILARIOUSLY - I was actually assigned
such_heights as my FV recipient this year! It had to happen sometime, I guess?! We actually matched on several different things, and I can't even remember if this was one of them. But her request for a Verity and Waris vid caught my eye. I promised her that I hadn't made her a treat this year, so she totally thought she had one up on me by making me the aforementioned CUTEST SIR IAN & SIR PATRICK BFF VID EVER. Then It turned out that I'd made her a vid anyway. MWA HA HA. She guessed this vid was from me before even watching it. The metadata was a bit of a clue :-) More ramblings about that :
Where to start? Well, this docudrama (or whatever it is) is, was made by Mark Gatiss as part of the 50th Anniversary celebrations. It is wonderful and perfect and if you are a Whovian and you haven't watched it yet I *strongly* suggest you do. It's only 90 minutes. It's a heartfelt love letter to Verity Lambert and Waris Hussein, and also to Sydney Newman and William Hartnell, and the somewhat fraught beginnings of what has become (in my totally unbiased opinion) the greatest tv show ever. It's a glorious reminder that Doctor Who was first brought to life by a Jewish woman and a gay Anglo-Indian man, both of whom were impossibly young, and surrounded on all sides by people who thought they didn't belong at the BBC. Of course the show was originally the brainchild of Sydney Newman, and was fronted by William Hartnall, Carole Ann Ford, Jaqueline Hill and William Russell. And of course there are so many other people responsible for its success - Delia Derbyshire, who created the music, Terry Nation who created the Daleks, and so many others - but without Waris and Verity's passion, talent, and bloody-minded determination to get their job done to the very best of their ability in the face of all sorts of ridiculous obstacles...the show as we know it just wouldn't exist. And it seems so fitting that a show which even now, even when it can sometimes be very dark and tragic, is ultimately about Hope and Kindness and Doing What's Right persevering in the continual struggle over Despair and Hatred and Taking The Easy Way Out...it seems fitting that this was Waris and Verity's show. I am so grateful to them both. So this is for them. <3
And as for the song choice...well, the reason
such_heights guessed that I made this before she even watched it is that I've played her this song before. I had vaguely thought about making a Leslie Knope vid to it for a long time, but never got around to it because I'm intimidated by the thought of vidding seven seasons of the marvel that is Leslie (so if anyone feels the need to make that vid, PLEASE DO, because if I was unlikely to make it before this, I'm definitely not going to now.) This song. I have a Lot Of Feelings about this song. This is because the first time I heard it was at a Klezmatics gig with my mum, three days after attending the funeral of my friend Boo Armstrong. Boo was one of my mum's patients for three years, and she and my mum became very close in that time. I only met her in January 2012, ten months before she died, but I was lucky enough to spend a fair bit of time with her in those ten months. We texted each other a lot of terrible jokes. She was just 37 when she died, and she achieved far more in her too-short life than most people do in twice that time. She was a committed activist, a genuine world-changer, and someone who would identify a lack and immediately work to fix it. She was proactive, provocative, compassionate, enthusiastic, funny, brave and warm. Thinking about her always inspires me to try and be a better person. I am naturally pretty lazy, apathetic and fearful - I am like the hedgehogs in the Animals of Farthing Wood, and I curl up in a ball and hide when things are difficult. Boo was not like that, and that's something that I try very hard to remember whenever I feel like curling up in a ball and hiding. So when I heard this song at the gig three days after Boo's funeral, it struck me just how much this song made me think of her, and her approach to life. (It still does, every time, even after spending hours on this vid.) I wanted to vid it, but I knew it had to be about someone special. I couldn't waste it. Boo wasn't especially into Doctor Who, but she enjoyed my enthusiasm for it, and I think she would really have appreciated Verity Lambert. So this felt right. So, in a strange way, this is also for her.
And, of course, it's for
such_heights, who made this wonderful request, and who is the best friend in the world. And who enables me in alllllll my DW fannishness :-P
Anyway, enough talking now, I'm the only person who cares about all this backstory - here's the vid:

Lyrics
Well I’m gonna get through this world
The best I can, if I can
And I’m gonna get through this world
And I think I can.
Well I'm gonna work in this world
The best I can, if I can
And I’m gonna work in this world
And I think I can
I’m gonna get through this world
The best I can, if I can
I'm gonna work in this world
The best I can, if I can
I’m gonna get through this world
The best I can.
Well I’m gonna walk in this world
The best I can, if I can
And I’m gonna walk in this world
And I think I can.
I am gonna talk in this world
The best I can, if I can
And I’m gonna talk in this world
And I think I can. And I think I can.
I’m gonna get through this world
The best I can, if I can
I'm gonna work in this world
The best I can, if I can
I’m gonna get through this world
The best I can.
Well, I’m gonna clean up this world
The best I can, if I can
And I’m gonna clean up this world
And I think I can.
I'm gonna leave this world behind
The best I can, if I can
I'm gonna leave this world behind
And I think I can. And I think I can.
I’m gonna clean up this world
The best I can, if I can
I'm gonna leave this world behind
The best I can, if I can
I’m gonna get through this world
The best I can.
