Er, so on a WILDLY DIFFERENT emotional note to my previous entry . . . I made a vid for Hamlet (2009), aka David Tennant's Hamlet :D :D :D I started it last year, making it the fifth (5th) vid featuring David Tennant that I made in the Year Of Our Lord 2019, because apparently one decade on from the Tenth Doctor's regeneration and NOTHING IN MY BRAIN HAS CHANGED. I did not expect this to be my life, this time last year, but here we are.

Words, words, words )

I love what a collaborative experience vidding can be. I've done quite a bit of beta-ing lately (god I really want to say 'of late'), some of it also for people I really don't know well, and it makes me happy that I can contribute to someone else's art even a tiny fraction of what other people contribute to mine. So thank you [personal profile] rydra_wong and [personal profile] elisi, you are both great <3 Here's a vid:

Er, so, I also made a festivid treat for [personal profile] such_heights because that is a thing I do. I actually made this before I made my assignment (and thought I was going to have to default on my assignment) and then proceeded to lie about it through my teeth to an unsuspecting [personal profile] such_heights, because I am a terrible person and a frighteningly good liar when I want to be.

She wanted a vid about Matilda and Miss Honey, and their lovely relationship, and so that is what she got <3 I'm glad you like it, Arthur. Thank you to [personal profile] usuallyhats and [personal profile] cosmic_llin for betaing and enthusiasm!

This year I received a completely delightful vid for the TV series of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, by [personal profile] gwenfrankenstien set to Janelle Monae :-D It brought happiness to my soul. Festivids reveeeeeeals! I got two wonderful vids - This Sullen Welsh Heart, a Pride vid by [personal profile] futuransky about politics and protest and hope and despair and carrying on fighting anyway. <3 It defies my feeble attempts at explanation, you should all go and watch it and cry.

I also got a treat in the form of You're My Best Friend, aka THE CUTEST SIR IAN & SIR PATRICK BFF VID EVER from my actual bff [personal profile] such_heights(<33333!). It's just a fucking delight. LOOKIT THEM. THEY LOVE EACH OTHER. We are totally going to be like that when we're old and even dorkier than we are now.

I totally meant to make treats this year, but was tragically short on inspiration, and also distracted making two kind of spontaneous Doctor Who vids....oops.

But - HILARIOUSLY - I was actually assigned [personal profile] such_heights as my FV recipient this year! It had to happen sometime, I guess?! We actually matched on several different things, and I can't even remember if this was one of them. But her request for a Verity and Waris vid caught my eye. I promised her that I hadn't made her a treat this year, so she totally thought she had one up on me by making me the aforementioned CUTEST SIR IAN & SIR PATRICK BFF VID EVER. Then It turned out that I'd made her a vid anyway. MWA HA HA. She guessed this vid was from me before even watching it. The metadata was a bit of a clue :-) More ramblings about that here )

Anyway, enough talking now, I'm the only person who cares about all this backstory - here's the vid:

Ok, so I should have done this on Golive day like everyone else, but I was too overwhelmed with squee. Is that an ok excuse? I received TWO amazing and wonderful vids this year, and I am THRILLED and DELIGHTED by both :-D \o/ I really love the way the treats culture seems to be growing every year in Festivids. It's such a warm, generous exchange. So, without further ado, I received:

Always 1895 by [personal profile] dkwilliams

This is a beautiful, nostalgic, layered look at Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson in the Granada TV series. I say 'layered', because not only does it make lovely use of the Granada series footage - Jeremy Brett's breathtaking physicality, the subtle, tender looks and gestures passed between Holmes and Watson, the alternately quiet and chaotic moments of their lives together in Baker Street - but it it is set to a recording of Basil Rathbone reading Vincent Starret's famous poem, over the top of the music from the Private Life of Sherlock Holmes. In addition to which - as if that wasn't enough - I started to notice on multiple repeat viewings that a lot of the chosen clips are moments when the series deliberately recreates the original illustrations by Sydney Paget - see for example the moment in the train carriage which recreates this illustration from The Adventure of Silver Blaze. The vid also uses some perfect clips to represent the more evocative moments in the poem - the yellow fog, Holmes' mischievous reveal of the papers at 'England is England yet', the 'view-halloo' out on the moors. I especially love Watson's faint on 'Only those things the heart believes are true.' (Like he never really believed in his heart that Holmes was gone. Like the fans didn't.)

But as well as the multiple versions of Holmes and Watson that are conjured in this vid, the use of external footage from real-world recordings of the First World War adds a whole additional layer of pathos. The vid summary is 'No matter what changes occur in the real world, for Sherlock Holmes and his Watson(s), it is always 1895' which reflects the message of the poem - and the inspired use of the real world footage really *does* give Holmes and Watson the very timeless quality that the poem talks about. And at the same time, it seems to insinuate them even further into the real fabric of our world. If that makes sense? It's not at all jarring to see Holmes and Watson juxtaposed with back and white images of the WW1 battlefields. It just makes them seem more real. I don't know, I'm not being very coherent here. What even are words. Just watch the vid. In conclusion, I love this. It is everything I love about the enduring mythos of Holmes and Watson <3

***

I also received a treat in the form of Flash Bang Wallop by the very sneaky and wonderful [personal profile] cosmic_llin.

......

......

*flails incoherently*

......

WHAT CAN I EVEN SAY. THIS IS A VID ABOUT MICHAEL PALIN AND HIS FACE AND IT'S UTTERLY PERFECT AND I LOVE HIM AND I LOVE THIS VID AND I LOVE [personal profile] cosmic_llin. The song choice is amazing - absolutely full of JOY and and a very British kind of wry humour. Ideal for the lovely Mr Palin and his Pole to Pole adventures, particularly as the whole song is about recording awkward moments on camera. But more than that - the vid just dances along, showcasing all the adorable, gentlemanly dorkiness that I love about Michael Palin (my first ever celebrity crush, age 12). I particularly love the shot of him casually strolling amongst the camels, and the kissing shot over 'When Juliet fell for Romeo'. I love him veiled in a mosquito net ('in a wedding group'), dressed up as a Roman ('in a Shakespeare play') and covered in mud and jumping naked off a boat and all the other clever lyrical matches. I love his face. I love his dancing. I love his reactions to everything, and his friendliness to everyone. I love the people he meets on his journey all befriending him and watching him interact with the world with some combination of delight, fondness and perplexity. I love his game expressions as he bravely submits to whatever indignities he has signed himself up for next, all the while filmed by his crew. Have I mentioned that I love his face?

I actually can't watch this without a huge, ridiculous grin. I will watch it every time I am sad, and I suggest everybody else does likewise <3

THANK YOU LOVELY FESTIVIDDERS \o/

[community profile] festivids reveals time! Abracadabra.

I had the best time ever making L.O.V.E for [personal profile] turquoisetumult, (who, incidentally, made me my amazing Amelie vid last year). She requested a vid focusing on Beatrice and Benedick (aka Fred and Wesley from Angel) and their comedic shenanigans. This song just sort of popped into my head whilst I was thinking about the film one day, and - in an almost unprecedented feat of speediness - I got the first draft done in a single weekend. It was just THAT MUCH FUN to make. Of course, I then spent the next two months tweaking it and fiddling with it, and I'm very grateful to both [personal profile] usuallyhats and [personal profile] raven for their enthusiasm and beta comments <3

Once again, [personal profile] such_heights and I decided to make life harder/more entertaining for ourselves by making our festivids in secret. This year we had the added bonus of our lovely flatmate K, who was our Secret Keeper and knew everything. I am very proud to say that I managed to work out BOTH of [personal profile] such_heights vids on my first guess, and you should definitely go and watch them because they are amazing and glorious.

Anyway, without further ado:

Festirecs!

So it's been a week since [community profile] festivids went live, and I have watched SO MANY VIDS. It is indeed a glorious time. (Apologies in advance, there may be a lot of capslock in this post.)

I was lucky enough to receive TWO VIDS this year, and my little heart near exploded with joy. TWO WHOLE VIDS. This has never happened before.

I got a delightful vid for my all-time favourite film, A Fish Called Wanda. (It's probably best not to ask why this weird little comedy, of all things, is my favourite film, because I'm not sure I could tell you. It may have something to do with Wanda's infectious smile, and lovely Michael Palin imprinting on me at an early age.) Anyway, Whatever Wanda Wants is a perfect summary of Wanda's character, and how she TOTALLY PLAYS all of the other characters in the film to get what she wants. The song is sexy and charming and rather cheeky, just like Wanda herself, and the editing does a great job of capturing the visual comedy in a film with a lot of verbal humour. Also, it has MICHAEL PALIN'S FACE, which is the most wonderful of faces <3

I also received Wherever You Will Go for Wallace and Gromit. Reader, I cried. WALLACE AND GROMIT. 'Oooh, this will be ridiculous wacky fun!', my co-vid-watchers and I thought. THEN THERE WERE UNEXPECTED FEELS. I just. The first three Wallace & Gromit adventures were a fundamental part of my childhood. I remember watching them every Christmas. I quote them in small ways all the time. They are such an intrinsic part of my British upbringing, I find it strange when other people haven't seen them. And THIS VID. It *is* wacky fun, and is full of great moments of humour and wonderful comic literalism, but also GROMIT'S SAD LITTLE FACE and FEELINGS and him and Wallace rescuing each other in ridiculous ways. Also, TOWER OF SHEEP. And the song choice is glorious and inspired and I would never have thought it would work but it does. I'm afraid I actually can't be more coherent than that.

'Unexpected feels' has turned out to kind of be the theme of this year's festivids*. [personal profile] such_heights and I celebrated Go Live Day over at Purple Heights Manor with our lovely mostly-but-not-entirely-north-London-based vidding crew, [personal profile] carawj, [personal profile] cosmic_llin, [personal profile] happydork, [personal profile] usuallyhats and [personal profile] silly_cleo. We had a wonderful afternoon of tea, Cards Against Humanity, pizza, brownies, squee, and unexpected Feelings attacks from unlikely fandoms. We may have all had emotional hangovers the next day. Or that could have been the sugar crash from all the chocolate brownies.

*Also, sharks. There were a lot of sharks.

I haven't watched all 205(!) vids yet, but here are some of my favourites so far:

Run The World for Agents of SHIELD

Collide for Anastasia

Do My Thing for Bend It Like Beckham

I Am The Rain for Brave

Keep Breathing for Chariots of Fire

Soon Love Soon for Cloud Atlas

Lantern for Donald Strachey Mysteries

Dance Apocalyptic for Footloose

All We Got for The Great Gatsby

221B and a Half for The Great Mouse Detective

What Sharp Teeth You Have for Hanna

Fireproof for Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters

All Star for Lego LOTR

9 to 5 for Lego Star Wars

Banging Them Together for Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail

The Edge Of Glory for Mulan

Lifeforms for Never Let Me Go

Nine Years of Ballet, ASSHOLE! for Outrageous Fortune

Moves Like Jaeger for Pacific Rim

Ring of Fire for Parks and Recreation

You Always Make Me Smile for The Sarah Jane Adventures

(You Drive Me) Crazy for Sharknado

ABC for Sister Act movies

Kids for Spirited Away

Quite The Right Team for Star Trek - Next Generation

Ocean for Stardust

No Church In The WIld for The Tudors

It's Not The Same for Walk On Water

Such Great Heights for Wall-E

Breath Of Life for Wonder Woman

….er, that was a longer list than I thought. Wow, whittling down the list for the Festivids show at this year's Vidukon is going to be HARD.

The second vid....the second vid is I've Just Seen A Face, made as a treat for [personal profile] such_heights :-P

She had NO IDEA, MWA HA HA HA! The vid is a blatant love letter to KAREN GILLAN'S FACE OF JOY, and it was a lot of fun to make! Though it was possibly even *more* fun to watch [personal profile] such_heights squee over, whilst rejoicing in secret on the sofa next to her :-D I am such a good liar and am NOT ASHAMED.

[community profile] festivids reveeeeeeeeeals!

First and foremost: THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU to [personal profile] turquoisetumult for making me the most beautiful vid! Amelie is one of my very favourite films EVER, and I have wanted to *be* Amelie for most of my life. Beauty in the Breakdown completely captures the magic, the fragility and the emotion of both the film and the character. I love it to bits. And I am in awe of her talent....go watch it and then go watch the film again and then go do something small and lovely for someone.

Second: I made a thing! In fact...I made TWO THINGS *shock horror*

The first was Devils, a Gormenghast vid which I made for [personal profile] caramarie. It's been several years since I read the original books, but I thoroughly enjoyed rewatching the tv series, marvelling at the truly astounding number of amazing British actors involved (many of whom tragically did not make it into the vid) and generally rediscovering the magnificent character that is Steerpike. He is just *so evil*. I wanted to make something dark and creepy about Steerpike's rise to power, and the poison at the heart of Gormenghast - both Steerpike himself, and the Law of the castle.

As [personal profile] such_heights and I now reside under the same roof, and there was a small chance we would be assigned each other, we decided to vid in SECRET. This has led to much hilarity, and even a little 'secret vidding' song (sung to the tune of 'Secret Tunnel', for those of you who are A:TLA fans). Consequently, I couldn't rely on my usual beta extraordinaire - so many, MANY thanks are due to Arj, who stepped in valiantly and sent several very interesting and extremely helpful beta-emails. :-)

(Incidentally, both [personal profile] such_heights and I guessed each other's vid on our first guess. I....yeah.)

So, [community profile] festivids reveals are up! Woop! I've had SO much fun participating in my very first exchange - as usual, [personal profile] such_heights is to blame for dragging me (inevitably) ever deeper into the swirling ocean of fandom. Perhaps dragging is the wrong word. Enticing? Cajoling? Luring? Anyway, I've had an awesome time and shall most definitely be participating again this year! :-D

BEAUCOUP de gratitude due to [personal profile] winterevanesce, who made me a beautiful and moving vid for the French film Love Me If You Dare (Jeux d'Enfants in French) - it's not very well known over here, but it's romantic and twisted and stunning and Find Your Way is definitely perfect advert for it! Go watch it, people.

Meanwhile, I got to make a Moulin Rouge vid for [livejournal.com profile] gigglemonster, which completely intimidated me when I first got my assignment, because she is responsible for one of my very *favourite* John/Rodney vids! But once I'd got over that, I had a great time vidding an extremely shiny source I would otherwise never have thought of playing with. :-D
