OMG, yes yes to all of this. I suppose the Complaining About Rey and Complaining About Finn was inevitable, but given I've finally quit tumblr and have no online social life I've managed to avoid seeing any of it even peripherally and for that, I am thankful. BUT YES TO ALL OF THIS.
Especially yes to your bit about Donna vs Clara and women being stripped of their powers/memories/Hero status. Especially since so fucking often these moments are coded with the imagery of sexual violence and violation of consent, or used as a sort narrative punishment for out-shining the male lead, rising above her place (hellooo, Harriet Jones, former PM).
It's funny tho, because as I watched The Force Awakens what I noticed about Rey and Finn was mostly how obviously scared they were, how overwhelmed, how the universe suddenly opened up and got a billion times bigger and oh look! now we're stealing a wrecked old ship and oh no! now there's LIGHTSABERS EVERYWHERE. Like, the most immediate thing I took away was how much they were scrambling to make anything go right. And they rose to the occasion magnificently.
Rey was amazing, and she deserves to continue to be amazing. (And if we could get some ladies of color in episodes Eight and Nine that would be great too).
