Vid Recs Wanted!

SO in an exciting turn of events, I'm going to be VJ-ing a show at this year's Vidukon! (For those of you know haven't heard of it - it's a super awesome vidding con, hosted in Cardiff in June, and if you are a vidder / vid fan who does not make vids but enjoys watching them, you should totally come! If anyone needs convincing, I'm more than happy to flail about it at you.)

My show is going to be on the theme of Constructed Realities - I'm thinking AU vids, fake trailers that cast actual shows in a whole new light, fake trailers for entirely non-existent shows, vids for books/podcasts with no canon visual source, crossover vids, vids for fic, vids that use a lot of manips, crack-tastic vids that use the source to tell an entirely different story, etc etc. You get the idea. Anything where the vidder has used the footage in a way that somehow transcends the original source.

I have a few vids in mind already, but would really love to hear any recs from other people! Thoughts?

So the one that comes straight to mind is Closer, but it might just hit too many common triggers to be shown? I don't know, but I mention it anyway. :)

I also love this version of Mary Poppins as though it were a horror trailer.

Oh, yay thanks for all of these! They're all fab. I was really interested to see Closer - not being brought up on Star Trek, I hadn't come across that before! I've put it on my spreadsheet, and as it's so famous it does feel like it ought to be in the show…but I see what you mean about the triggers. I'll have a think.

The others are both fab too - though I was actually thinking I would love to show YOUR Night Vale vidlet, if you have no objections? :-)

After reading that Fanlore page on Closer, I found that the OTW has a page with some really exemplar vids that really do transform the source material.

I just watched all of them. ;) The last one "The Test" seems to really fit your theme: it's a remix of the Star Trek reboot and TOS, with new Kirk getting flashes of the older Spock's memories of younger Spock and Kirk from his reality.

Omg I love 'The Test' - and I haven't even seen much of TOS! It's a masterful vid. I hadn't thought of putting it in this show before seeing it on that page, but it's now gone on the spreadsheet :-)

It is! Basically, it's the AU where the bad guy wins -- I realize the smallishness of the fandom might be an issue for vidshow purposes, if you need the AU part to come across without a small novel's worth of explicatory program notes, but if you can use it, it's yours.

I think the size of the fandom isn't important - and anyway there are bound to be people there who love Ashes to Ashes! It's a lovely vid, thanks for pointing me to it.

I made Fun Lovin' Criminal Minds in which the normally heroic FBI agents tracking down serial killers are instead "running around robbing banks all whacked up on scooby snacks".

Hurricanes - http://lensflair-inc.livejournal.com/33050.html - is a pretty amazing Sam/Tyrol constructed reality ship vid, but unfortunately it seems to be completely offline right now. I mostly mention it because the vidder also "open sourced" the manipulated kisses involved for general use - link is on the page (though again I think it's offline now.)

Like O Like H - http://m-a-r-i-k-s.livejournal.com/14253.html - is a vid that uses external footage pretty amazingly to explore a backstory described in canon but never represented visually (in this case, involving violence and child abuse, so appropriate warnings for that).
